MnFHAC Goals
- To help Minnesota's Congressional Delegation articulate their positions about affordable housing and homelessness policy and understand how federal affordable housing and homelessness programs impact their constituents.
- To engage tenants and other community leaders by identifying them as knowledgeable housing resources in their communities.
- To regularly define the most effective policy for Minnesota's affordable housing and homelessness issues.
Projects
Coordinate Call to Action and Lobby Day to encourage constituents to speak directly with their Representatives about their concerns.
Organize of statewide conference calls among state agencies to create strategic development plans that more holistically address MN's housing needs.
Authorize letters to the editor & monitor local media dialogue to ensure accurate understanding and initiate state dialogue.
Adopt a leadership position in hosting and coordinating statewide events.
General Overview One of our primary concerns is the expansion of the HUD budget to prevent cutbacks that affect housing programs that may share the brunt of the cuts.
Section 8 Voucher Program Congress must expand the HUD budget to fully fund all vouchers currently in use—to regain vouchers that were cut in previous years and provide vouchers to families on waiting lists across the state.
Public Housing Housing authorities must be provided the resources they need to adequately operate public housing.
McKinney-Vento Congress must direct HUD to change the definition of "chronic homelessness" to include families with children and unaccompanied youth.
National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF) We support the inclusion of the Affordable Housing Fund within legislation to reform regulation of Government Sponsored Enterprises, and support any other legislation that would create an ongoing, permanent, dedicated source of revenue to supplement existing funding to build and preserve affordable housing and provide a substantial benefit to extremely low income households.
Rural Housing Services (U.S. Department of Agriculture) Congress must continue to provide funding for new construction for the Section 515 program as well as funds to revitalize existing properties and tenant-based RD vouchers. If the preservation statute is amended, it should be changed only in ways that continue to preserve needed properties and fully protect tenants.
